Civil Litigation
We represent clients in disputes before the Magistrates' Courts and the High Court, from initial demand through to trial and, where necessary, appeal. Every matter is assessed on prospects and cost before we proceed, so you know what you are taking on. Where settlement serves you better than judgment, we say so.
Family Law
We attend to divorce, whether uncontested or opposed, and to all matters flowing from it, including care and contact, maintenance, and the division of the joint estate or accrual. We also draft antenuptial contracts and parenting plans, and appear in protection order proceedings. The approach is measured, with the interests of any minor children kept central.
Contracts
We draft, review and negotiate agreements across the commercial spectrum, including sale, lease, service, shareholder, loan and suretyship agreements. Our concern is that the document does what you intend it to do and holds up when the relationship comes under strain. We also advise on breach, cancellation and the enforcement of existing agreements.
Commercial Law
We advise businesses on company formation and structuring, shareholder and director duties, corporate governance, business acquisitions and disposals, and compliance under the Companies Act and Consumer Protection Act. Whether you are establishing an entity or restructuring an existing one, we provide advice that accounts for the commercial reality as much as the legal position.
Insolvency Law
We act in voluntary and compulsory sequestration and liquidation, business rescue proceedings, and the proving of claims against insolvent estates. We advise creditors on recovery prospects and act for debtors seeking an orderly resolution. Early advice materially improves outcomes in this field.
Mediation & Arbitration
We represent clients in mediation and arbitration proceedings and draft the dispute resolution clauses that govern them. These processes are frequently faster and more cost effective than litigation, and they keep commercial disputes out of the public record. We advise candidly on which forum best suits your matter.
Notarial Services
We attend to antenuptial contracts, notarial bonds, servitudes, long term leases, cessions, powers of attorney, and the authentication of documents for use abroad, including apostille certification. Notarial work carries strict formal requirements and is executed with the precision those requirements demand.
Deceased Estates
We administer deceased estates from reporting to the Master of the High Court through to the final liquidation and distribution account. We attend to the appointment of executors, the collection and realisation of assets, creditor claims, and the transfer of immovable property to heirs. We keep families informed at every stage of what is often a lengthy process.
Wills
We draft wills that give clear effect to your intentions and comply with the formalities of the Wills Act, so that your estate is not delayed or contested on technical grounds. We advise on testamentary trusts, the nomination of executors and guardians, and the practical consequences of your bequests. Existing wills should be reviewed whenever your circumstances change.
Conveyancing
We attend to the transfer of residential, commercial, agricultural and sectional title property. We also handle subdivisions, consolidations and the registration of servitudes. Transfers are driven actively so that your registration is not delayed unnecessarily.
Correspondent Work
We act as correspondents for firms outside our jurisdiction in all matters served or heard in the courts of our area, including the issuing and service of process and appearances. We also provide strategic guidance on the local court's Practice Directives. We strive to assist all our instructing attorneys with regular feedback and reliable attendance to deadlines.
Debt Collection
We recover outstanding debts on behalf of businesses and individuals, from letters of demand through to summons, judgment and execution. We advise on the commercial merits of pursuing a debt before costs are incurred, and where a debtor has no attachable assets, we tell you so. Collections are handled in compliance with the National Credit Act and the Debt Collectors Act.

Mignon de Jager Hattingh

Mignon founded De Jager Hattingh in 2022, with the intention of building a practice that gave clients practical legal services delivered with care and attention to detail.
She obtained her Bachelor of Laws from the North West University in 2017 and was admitted as an attorney of the High Court in February 2020. She was later admitted as a notary public and obtained her right of appearance in the High Court in 2021. She has since completed courses in advanced trial advocacy, notarial practice and conveyancing, and advanced contract law, the last through the University of Cape Town, on the simple view that the law does not stand still and neither should the practitioner applying it.
Her field of interest is commercial. She assists clients across a broad range of commercial matters, with particular experience in the mining industry, and much of her work lies in drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts. She prefers to understand the commercial objective before turning to the legal question, which usually produces a shorter and more practical route to it.
Beyond her own client matters, she serves as chairperson of the Middelburg Legal Practitioners Association and as treasurer of the Mpumalanga Attorneys Association, and has recently been appointed a commissioner of the Small Claims Court.
Mignon handles her matters personally and prefers to build relationships that outlast the instruction that began them.
Angelique Laas
Senior Associate

Angelique, a senior associate at De Jager Hattingh, brings more than a decade of civil litigation and commercial dispute experience to the firm.
She obtained her Bachelor of Laws from the University of South Africa in 2013 and was admitted as an attorney in 2015. She obtained her right of appearance in the High Court on 8 August 2016 and has since completed the Practice Management Course and a Trial Advocacy Course presented by senior and retired judges.
Her field of interest is civil litigation and commercial disputes. She has practised in every level of the South African court system, from the Magistrates' and Regional Courts through the High Court to the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court, and appears regularly in the High Court, including in opposed motions and appeals. Her approach to a dispute is strategic before it is procedural. What is the client's position, what is realistically recoverable, and what is the most direct route to it. The detail is then attended to closely, because litigation is ordinarily won or lost on it.
Beyond her own client matters, she has served on the Legal Practice Council's Investigating, Disciplinary and Mediation Committee since 2019.
Boitumelo Mphela
Junior Associate
LLM, UNISA
Boitumelo joined De Jager Hattingh in 2024 as a candidate attorney and later went on to be admitted as an attorney of the High Court in 2025. Boitumelo was promoted to the position of junior associate in 2026.
She obtained her Bachelor of Laws from the University of the Free State in 2022 and completed her Master of Laws in corporate law through the University of South Africa in February 2026, taking up postgraduate study alongside full-time practice.
Her work lies in research, drafting and analysis, and her postgraduate field sits directly alongside the firm's commercial practice. Boitumelo is drawn to the questions behind an instruction rather than only the instruction itself, which tends to produce advice a client can act on rather than merely rely on.
Boitumelo intends to qualify as a notary public in due course.
Thando Mofokeng
Professional Assistant

Thando, a professional assistant, was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa on 31 October 2025.
He obtained his Bachelor of Laws from the University of the Western Cape in 2021, graduating among the top qualifying students in his class. He served his articles at Du Toit Smuts and Partners Attorneys, where he consulted with clients, drafted pleadings and affidavits, appeared in the Magistrates' Court and assisted on High Court litigation across road accident fund claims, unlawful arrest, medical negligence and matrimonial matters.
His field of interest is civil litigation. He carries his own files and is the person a client on those matters will speak to, from the first consultation through to the hearing. Court appearance work forms a substantial part of his practice and he prepares matters on the footing that they will be argued rather than settled, which is ordinarily what puts a firm in a position to settle them well.
He approaches an instruction on the same terms as the rest of the firm. Establish what the client is trying to achieve, determine the most direct route to it, and attend closely to the detail on the way.
